Furniture as Art
Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.
-William Morris

Well, how about if you can do both?!

Happy July, everyone! Doesn’t it feel like we reached the second half of the year in just a blink of an eye? Today, we’re back with a dose of inspiration for how you can create pieces of furniture in your home that are useful as well as beautiful. Instead of just having art on the walls, we’ll show you how functional pieces of furniture can be turned into works of art too!

Here are a few show-stopping pieces, all hand-painted in Chalk Paint by @dingleydellcreative. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is so versatile that it can be used to create beautiful artistic effects on furniture! These hand painted florals are stunning, aren’t they?

If painterly florals won’t work with your home’s interiors, then how about a striking geometric pattern on a mid-century sideboard, as painted by Annie Sloan’s recent Painter in Residence, Polly Coulson. She worked with a variety of Chalk Paint colours, and used masking tape to create her pattern. We especially love how the design flows into the inside of the sideboard as well!

Finally, what do you do if you’re not completely confident in your hand-painting skills? Well, we’ve found some amazing upcycled pieces of furniture created with decoupage paper! Decoupage is a technique that lets you paste paper or fabric onto furniture in a fool-proof durable manner using Annie Sloan’s Image Medium and Decoupage Paper.

Start off with a base coat of chalk paint, then apply this Sunflower Decoupage Paper with Annie Sloan Image Medium. With decoupage paper, it looks as if the sunflower has been painted on. It’s painless, quick and fun to do!

Or how about this piece with this gorgeous Peony Decoupage Paper? This sideboard was painted in Athenian Black and Oxford Navy, then sealed in Clear and Black wax.

We also had some fun with Annie Sloan’s line of Decoupage papers a little while ago, and gave a refresh to a little table. It’s a cool pop of color for sure!

We hope this has sparked off some ideas for how you can reimagine your homes with furniture as art.

Happy designing and painting, everyone!
